报告人简介:

Dr. Zhao earned his Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from Texas A&M University in 2010 under the mentorship of Prof. Hong-Cai Joe Zhou. Following his postdoctoral training at Argonne National Laboratory, he joined the Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at the National University of Singapore as an Assistant Professor in July 2012. He was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in July 2018 and to Full Professor in January 2025. Dr. Zhao’s research focuses on advanced porous materials and hybrid membranes, with applications in clean energy and environmental sustainability. His contributions to the field have earned him recognition on the Stanford/Elsevier World’s Top 2% Scientists list and as a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate. In addition to his research, Dr. Zhao has played a key role in academic publishing, serving as an Associate Editor for Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research since June 2021 before becoming its Executive Editor in January 2024. He also served as the Conference Co-Chair for the 9th International Conference on Metal-Organic Frameworks & Open Framework Compounds (MOF2024), held in Singapore in July 2024.

报告内容摘要:

The recent decade has witnessed the booming development of advanced porous materials (APMs) such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Unlike their conventional counterparts (e.g., silica, activated carbon, zeolite), APMs have well-ordered structures, uniform yet tunable pore sizes, and versatile chemical compositions suitable for various modifications. Membrane technologies have attracted increased attention recently because of their important applications in clean energy and environmental sustainability. The combination of APMs in membrane technologies would generate innovative solutions and tremendous impacts. In this talk, I will present our group’s studies on APMs as membrane materials for liquid separations, including water purification, alcohol dehydration, and organic solvent nanofiltration. Through strategies including postsynthetic defect healing, judicious selection of secondary building units, and adopting flexible substrates, we have gradually revealed the potential of APMs for industrial liquid separations.
