报告题目: The chemical index of alteration (CIA) and evaluation of paleo-weathering intensity(页岩化学风化指数与古陆风化强度评估

报 告 人:Thomas Algeo     教授

报告时间:6月18日 16:00 -18:00

报告地点:明辨楼D404

报告人简介:

Dr. Algeo completed his Ph.D. at the University of Michigan before joining the faculty of the University of Cincinnati. He specializes in development of elemental proxies for paleoenvironmental analysis, laying the foundation for the modern approach to reconstruction of redox, salinity, watermass restriction, and chemical weathering intensity in paleoenvironmental systems. He has studied all of the Big Five mass extinctions and is the author of a leading theory for the Late Devonian extinctions, linking them to the evolution and spread of vascular land plants. He is a fellow of the Geological Society of America and the Geochemical Society and a PIFI fellow of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

报告内容摘要:

The chemical index of alteration (CIA) has become a widely used geochemical proxy for evaluating weathering intensity in paleosols and transported sediments. Correct use of the CIA proxy requires an understanding of the underlying chemistry and mineralogy of soils and weathering processes. In this talk, Dr. Algeo will discuss fundamentals of chemical weathering and how they are related to the CIA proxy, whether corrections to CIA (e.g., for K-metasomatism) are warranted, and how to infer protolith composition, with many examples drawn from China and globally.
